Avoid a courthouse visit: Miami-Dade launches online resolution for civil traffic tickets
The Eleventh Judicial Circuit launches Online Case Resolution April 30 with a pilot project to allow drivers who received civil traffic citations for proof of insurance, driver license, or auto registration to resolve their cases without coming to court.
With Online Case Resolution (OCR), drivers who have requested a court date for their civil traffic citations can simply upload the required documents from their cell phone, tablet or other Internet-connected device. A traffic hearing officer will then review the documents and dismiss the case if the documents are found to be in compliance.
Drivers who wish to participate in OCR for their eligible civil traffic citations must request a court date. Once they have received their notice of court appearance, they may follow instructions on the notice for how to resolve their cases online. During the current public health emergency, and under administrative orders from Chief Justice Charles Canady, many court events are taking place by alternative, remote means. The OCR initiative launching in Miami-Dade County is not a result of emergency response. It and other pilot projects have been in development for some time. However, this launch is an opportunity to use technology beneficially at a time when courthouses have limited public access.
Miami-Dade County Traffic Court had more than 19,000 potential cases eligible for online resolution in a recent snapshot of cases. More information, as well as training resources, are available on the Miami-Dade Courts Online Case Resolution page or by calling 305-548-5333.
Miami-Dade’s OCR pilot is part of a statewide Online Dispute Resolution project established by the Florida Supreme Court in June 2019. The pilots explore the use of technology in providing the public with quicker and easier access to the courts.
The Miami-Dade Courts are one of six judicial circuits selected in Florida to implement pilot projects for a variety of case types – such as small claims, or simplified dissolutions of marriage. The pilots will be used to direct plans for future expansion across the state.
The six participating judicial circuits selected vendors to provide ODR services. In addition to Miami-Dade County, others launching initiatives in coming weeks are:
- Columbia County, small claims
- Lake County, small claims
- Orange County, small claims
- Polk County, dissolution of marriage without children
- Broward County, dissolution of marriage without children
